Slashdot reports on a Reuters story that the number of mobile phone accounts worldwide has reached 50% of the number of people worldwide. I would not have guessed this many.

The market penetration in the UK is >100% - there are more mobile phones than people. Hong Kong and Luxembourg are at like 150% or something ridiculous. We're only at 70% or so in the US.

Is this like accounts, like on PokerStars, where there are many dormant account?

How many cell phones are in active use? The article no say.

How much of this is prepaid?

In my household we have a total of 6 mobile lines (4 local, 2 of which are prepaid; 2 US prepaid).
